A mobile computer's "Drop rating" refers to the number of feet the device can fall to concrete without suffering damage or malfunctioning. For instance, a hand-held computer with a "5 foot drop rating" can withstand a 5 feet fall to concrete. Typically, drop ratings serve as a surrogate measure of how durable a mobile device is with the higher the drop (e.g. 6 foot vs 4 foot drop), the more the durable the device.
It should be noted there are NO "formal" drop rating certifications or standards so manufacturers may differ on how they determine the drop rating. In theory, a "standardized" drop rating should include some number of drops to all six sides of a device plus corners at a specific temperature. However, given the absence of a drop rating standard, some manufacturers may specify different drop ratings for their handheld computers based on different conditions. For example, the Motorola (Symbol) MC75 Mobile Computer Product Specifications states "5 foot drop to concrete, 2 drops per 6 sides at ambient temperature 73 F/23 C; 4 foot drop to concrete, 6 drops per 6 sides over operating temperature range."
